Do you value evidence over faith? Do you think that ethical issues are more complex than black and white? Are you skeptical of psedoscience and New Age nonsense? Do you want to make a stand against religious fundamentalism? Do you think SCIENCE is awesome? Are you the skeptical one in your circle of friends? Would you rather see our politicians citing studies, not ideology when presenting their policies? Is your biggest religious crisis choosing between the flying spaghetti monster and the invisible pink unicorn? Do you disagree with the above, but want to challenge both others and yourself through debate and discussion?
The RMIT Secular Society (RSS) is for the people who answer yes, a student club focused on the promotion of secularism, reason, critical thinking, science, evidence and all those things that have made modern civilisation the place it is today. Just as importantly, providing a hangout for people to meet, debate and have a good time.
The secular society is part social, part political activist, and part educational. Everyone is welcome, even if you disagree with everything we're about (we love diversity of viewpoints!)
We believe that church and state should stay seperate, we believe that claims should be evaluated using reason and facts, not faith and ideology, and we believe in arguing over everything.
Sometimes we'll be chatting at a pub, or hearing guest speakers talk about issues in the media, or hosting a debate, or mooching free food, or just about anything else that strikes our fancy.
If you're interested, stay informed by joining our Facebook group here or a mailing list (send a message to rmitsecularsociety@gmail.com to be added)
We work with the wider atheist/rationalist/secular/humanist/skeptic community and are a member of the Freethought University Alliance, which links together similar clubs in universities across Australia!
We're also best buddies with the University of Melbourne Secular Society (www.umss.org) - tell your Melbourne Uni friends about them.
