How to Access Student Rights Information:
Because of the Howard Government's VSU laws, and the associated funding cuts, your RMIT Student Union has had to restructure how RMIT students access the Student Rights Advice service. We at RMIT Student Union have been striving hard to provide you the best service with regards to Students rights advice, through various mediums. Below is a list of tools to help you access the Students Rights information as well as guide you through dealing with your issues.
Student Rights Leaflets:
You can download the Student Rights leaflets from the list on the right side of the screen or you can pick up one from any SU front office. Student Rights leaflets are designed to give you enough background information to help empower you to handle your case by yourself.
Group Sessions:
Group Sessions are a very helpful and informative resource to help guide you through the processes outlined in the Student Rights leaflets. Keep checking our Student Union website to find out if there is a group information session being held, and make sure you attend it. If there is a topic you would like covered in a group information session that would benefit you and other students, please let us know. Even if you would like to get individual advice for your case, it is important that you attend the group session which will assist you to prepare yourself for the Student Rights Officers (SRO) meeting. At peak times, due to high caseloads, you may not be able to book an individual appointment with an SRO without having first attended a group session.
Student Rights Officer appointment:
Because of major staffing cuts as a result of Government’s VSU laws, the Student Rights Officers are unable to take on the high caseload that they’ve had in the past. So if you consider your case as an urgent one, drop into the Student Union offices at your respective campus to meet the Student Liaison Officer (SLO) to discuss your issue. SLOs have been appointed to give you initial support and advice and to help empower students to assert their rights. SLOs will also help you to make an appointment with a Student Rights Officer if this is required.
