Grow a Heart RMIT

RMIT does not recognise the rights of students- speak up now about your experiences! @Facebook

Although almost all students affected by medical conditions, whether temporary or ongoing, have legal rights under the Disability Discrimination Act in practice the University does not fully recognise these rights.

RMIT is suspicious of students who need support!

There seems to be an assumption amongst certain RMIT panels that we are making it up and that it is illegitimate to ask for help. This means that special consideration policies have been written to make them as restrictive and narrow as possible and you often get the sense that the university actively looks for reasons to deny requests even when it knows that the student is in genuine distress.

RMIT is unreasonable!

Many expectations or restrictions placed on students who are in distress or who need extra time or support are completely unreasonable.

Why do we only have 48 hours to apply for special consideration?

Why can't we talk to someone face to face?

This situation is unacceptable, but it won't change without pressure on RMIT.

We are asking you to do two things to help us make changes at RMIT.

1.  Support our demands for:

* Full implementation of the Disability Standards for Education

* Special Consideration Policy to be based on: a conversation with a sympathetic human being. And

* On reasonable timeframes and expectations

* Independent and user friendly reviews of decisions about support

* An end to attempts to deter students from asking for help and

* Funding for equity in teaching

And

Anonymously tell your story- by explaining how it feels to have your consideration rejected or to be not listened to we can hope to show RMIT that we are real people who deserve real support
